Accelerated Reader Information

How does a teacher find a child’s reading level?

In Accelerated Reader, your child’s reading level is called the ZPD. This ‘level’ can be found in your child’s reading record and is updated every half term. Once per half term, your child will take an online reading assessment called STAR READING. This test will assess your child’s ability to recall (where the answer is in the text) and infer/deduce (where your child has to be a detective). Importantly, in KS2 especially, reading is not the ability to decode words and letters but the ability to recall, infer and deduce. This online assessment generates your child’s ZPD level (or reading level).

How does my child choose books and are they supported when choosing?

Children access our school library at least twice or more each week. During these times, your child is accompanied by a member of school staff. When they choose a new book, the book level is checked to ensure the book is suitable.

What is my child’s ‘points target’?

Based upon your child’s online assessment score (and a little teacher professional judgement) a target is generated for your child each half term. When a quiz is taken, your child will earn points (e.g. 1 point) and this will count towards their target (e.g. 10 points for the half term).

Can I find more books for my child to read at home?

To find appropriate books for your child at home, or to check and see if a book has an accompanying quiz, use the AR book finder website: http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/

How can I find out how my child is doing?

In each class, you will find a chart that tracks the progress of all children. If you wish to see how close your child is to their target, you may take a look at this chart.

Can I use AR at the weekend?

Yes. We’ve now updated the settings to allow AR to be used at the weekends.
